The Battlefords’ first comic convention looking to entertain fans of all ages

May 9, 2019 | 11:50 AM

Cosplayers, get ready.

The North Battleford Public Library, along with Amazing Stories Comics in Saskatoon, will be hosting the city’s first Fan Fest this weekend. The Saturday event will be a jam-packed day, with vendors, speakers, creators, activities and of course, a costume contest to wrap the day up.

The event begins at 11:30 a.m., where Tom Grummett, of Superman, Superboy, and Robin DC fame, will host a meet and greet. Sign-ups for the escape room sessions, and a Smash Bros video game tournament will also begin when the doors open.

For the North Battleford Library, this is a major event, and something they believe the Battlefords has been wanting for quite some time according to head librarian Caroline Popadick.

“We came up with the idea, and have been planning it for a couple of months. We think it’s going to be a big hit, because there is that need out there,” she said.

There will be four panel discussions throughout the day, with Star Wars, Self-Publishing and Punch Comics, Local Creators and LGBTQ2 panels to be discussed. Participants in the Smash Bros video game tournament are to bring their own controller either for the Wii or Nintendo 64 consoles.

As for the costume contest, Popadick believes this will complete the day.

“Anyone can come in costume. Come dressed as your favourite character from any of the movies, graphic novels, or comics,” she said. “[It] all starts at 4 [p.m.], but you can register throughout the day.”

There will be two age categories for children under 13 and those above 13. Each category will have two prizes.

Popadick said the event is geared for all ages with something for everyone throughout the day.
