New podcast aims to look at the positive side of the Battlefords

Following some bad press and crime ratings, some have asked for the more positive stories out of the Battlefords and a new podcast aims to deliver that.

The Battlefords Untapped podcast came after a local committee searched for a way to highlight good stories from the region. Eric Anderson, who launched his own podcast YXEUnderground in Saskatoon came on board to host the new podcast after committee members approached him last October.

This season, the first two shows of the new podcast hit the Internet and Anderson hopes it changes perspectives.

“We’ve seen all the great parts in the Battlefords. [The Battlefords have] a combination of city and surrounded by stunning nature. It’s been a humbling, and eye opening experience,” he said.

Anderson said he understands the idea of the community working toward better things, and helping each other out whatever way they can. He sees a community looking for support, and trying to dispel the myths behind the city.

“Everyone, whether it’s a small project, or a big project,” he said. “[They say], we want to celebrate what’s happening in our community.”

Anderson says he’s back and forth from the Battlefords from Saskatoon, and each time he’s up, he makes time to interview people in the community. He’s spoked with five different people so far, and hopes to generate enough content for monthly episodes.

“The common theme is that people have a lot of pride in their community, and they love their community, and they want the outside world to know (how the community really is),” he said.

The first podcast episode featured an interview with Ursula Swindler, who spoke on the city’s new Capitol Annex Theatre. In his second episode, Anderson interviewed Colleen Sabraw, who played a significant role in creating Saskatchewan’s first natural playground in Centennial Park. Both interviews are around 20 to 25 minutes in length.

Moving forward, this month will feature a story on the armoury in town.

Anderson said he finds the project interesting as an outsider, adding there are many stories to tell.

“I don’t think it is hard to find. They’re out there doing great things, it’s just a matter of saying ‘Hey, I’d like to do a story with you,’” he said. “You need to make a conscious decision and say ‘I want to tell these stories.’”

Anderson said UndergroundYXE was a good template to start with, but the possibilities are endless when he looks into the future. As his Saskatoon podcast gains traction, he said more listeners are coming forward with interview suggestions.

“That’s the goal too, with Untapped. We start sharing these stories. Hopefully it inspires people,” he said.

While the project is still getting started, Anderson has future plans of making the project more collective where many can gather unique and positive stories. There are also ideas to incorporate visual elements through photos and videos.

“Podcasting is a really growing way to share stories and it’s growing in popularity,” he said. “There’s an eagerness to enter this world.”
