City planning work on new cinema parking lot and improved lighting

Film buffs heading to the new Capital Annex shouldn’t have to worry about finding a parking spot now that the city is getting started with its plans to develop a new parking lot.

Planning and Development Director Jennifer Niesink said during council’s meeting Monday the city plans to add another 50 to 60 stalls for the new parking lot to be located to the left of the cinema.

In addition to the 101 Street public parking lots, near the RCMP station and near the SLGA store, that will bring the total parking lot stalls in that area up to 150 overall when the third lot is completed, she said.

Along with stalls will be LED lighting upgrades in the three parking lots.

“In our budget for the (new) parking lot that we are re-doing, we stretched our lighting budget,” Niesink said.

Mayor Ryan Bater said the city will be waiting to see the tenders for the parking lot development which will be done sometime this summer.

“It should be more than adequate for downtown movie goers, and shoppers,” he said.

“It’s great for the city,” he said. “It’s great for the downtown. A cinema is an anchor. It brings its own traffic, and that’s being shown with parking.”

The city’s two-hour parking limit for public parking pertains only until 5 p.m. during the weekdays, so residents won’t have to worry about how long their vehicle is parked on the weeknights, or on weekends downtown if they are taking in a late movie.
