Allan skating rink to be renamed after late Humboldt Broncos captain

Mar 13, 2019 | 2:50 PM

The late captain of the Humboldt Broncos, Logan Schatz will be honoured this Saturday in his home community of Allan.

The town will hold a dedication ceremony for the Logan Schatz Memorial Arena in the skating rink during the afternoon of the town’s winter festival.

Mayor of Allan, Les Alm said this ceremony is important for the community and the Schatz family.

“This will be a part of his legacy, people will always see the name Logan Schatz Memorial Arena when they go into the skating rink at the communiplex,” Alm said.

The idea of the rink renaming was brought to Logan’s parents Kelly and Bonnie by Alm following the Humboldt Broncos bus crash and was in the works ever since.

“I also brought it forward to the Allan and District Communiplex Committee and they absolutely loved the idea,” Alm said. “Allan town council then in the all passed a resolution to name the skating rink the Logan Schatz Memorial Arena.”

The program will include special guests and the unveiling of signs that will be hung on the inside and outside of the rink. According to Alm, the signs were made by Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) industrial arts teacher Brian Hinz, who also taught Logan while he attended HCI.

Alm said a large crowd is expected to attend the dedication ceremony.

“Like the vigil we held on the Sunday after the crash, hundreds of people came out, and for Logan’s memorial service in the curling rink there had to be 3,000 people there,” Alm said.

This will be the second dedication for Logan in the community rink. Logan’s dad, Kelly put his heart and soul into a kids mini rink within the skating rink which is now known as Schatzy’s Corner.

“It was built, I think as a labour of love by Kelly and friends,” Alm said.

The rink has a plaque with a write-up on Logan and has logos of every team that Logan played on over his hockey career.

Alm told northeastNOW the rink was well used this season and serves as an area for kids to play in when Allan hosts hockey tournaments.

In the “Schatzy’s Corner” Facebook group, Bonnie Schatz posted a picture of the mini rink and wrote “We hope to spark Logan’s passion for hockey in all that come to play.”

The Allan Senior Flames were the winners of the southern division of the Wheatland Hockey League and will play the Kinistino Tigers in the playoffs.

The second game in the playoff series will be held on Saturday in the Logan Schatz Memorial Arena with a ceremonial puck drop at 7 p.m.
