North West College plans public meeting to discuss future growth

Feb 27, 2019 | 5:35 PM

North West College is looking at the possibility of increasing its Battlefords campus to meet the growing needs of the campus.

It will hold a community consultation March 6 to discuss the issue.

President and chief executive officer Jay Notay said the college is preparing a business case for the proposed construction of a new campus in the Battlefords and wants to gather public feedback. The idea has been under consideration since 2010.

Due to space constraints at the campus in North Battleford, Notay said the college has had to offer from five to 10 programs off-campus each year to meet the needs. Often these locations aren’t conducive to post-secondary education.

Director of Finance and Administration Tanis Studney said the proposal is still in the preliminary stages.

Those who can’t attend the event are invited to complete a survey available on the college’s website.

The college hopes to complete a business plan for the proposal by the end of March.

Studney said with the new psychiatric nursing program starting in the fall, there will be an increased need for space at the college. She said the public will have an opportunity to indicate what they need from the college as part of the consultation process.

“What can we do that can better meet our long-term and short-term needs here in our community and surrounding region,” Studney added.

The community consultation will take place at the Dekker Centre from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
