Orcas dominate between the lanes yet again

The Battlefords Orcas Swim Club was in Saskatoon last weekend and had a strong showing.

The club brought 13 swimmers to the competition, which was a long-course event and the first of the year for the club. This was the first chance for swimmers to qualify for nationals, being in an Olympic-sized pool. Seven of the older swimmers registered their best times.

The highlight of the weekend was Madison Higgs, 14, getting her national time in the 1,500 freestyle event and setting 12 new club records. Slade Pruden, 15, also qualified in 50-metre freestyle for a new provincial time.

Orcas Head Coach John Mcleod said he was extremely proud in his first year with the swim club.

“This was the first competition where I felt like I really belonged,” he said. “The kids had big smiles on their faces, racing really well and the team was really gelling together.”

The Orcas now set their sights on the provincial season, with two major meets just around the corner. They will send three swimmers to the A Provincials in Moose Jaw on March 8 to 10, and then AA Provincials in Regina from March 15 to 17.
