Picking the right flowers

Roses may not be your go-to flower this Valentine’s

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and the majority of men are lining up the quintessential dozen roses for their other half.

While red roses might seem like the obvious choice to give the lady in your life, a Prince Albert florist advises you to switch it up.

“It was an overwhelming response that they prefer a nice mixed arrangement over top of the dozen roses,” Stacy Coburn

Stacy Coburn with Scentiments Floral in Prince Albert said a study done through Flowers Canada showed ladies like a variety.

“It was an overwhelming response that they prefer a nice mixed arrangement over top of the dozen roses,” Coburn said.

She laughed when asked if flowers were just for women on Valentine’s Day.

“Quite often the ladies will also send the men flowers. We find the guys get quite a kick out of it… especially if we deliver it to them at work,” Coburn said.

Coburn added that giving flowers makes anyone feel special, it lets them know that someone is thinking about them.

Susan Chickowski with Burkitt’s Flowers in Prince Albert said while any amount of flowers is fine, if you want to make a big splash with the lady in your life go for a big arrangement, especially if the flowers are being delivered at work.

“You want to have it all done up with all the bells and whistles. All the other ladies are going to be looking and he’ll be getting those brownie points big time,” she said.

She said when giving flowers any budget can be accommodated.

Chickowski was also proud to announce that Burkitt’s has been wrapping roses for special someones for a long time.

“My Grandpa started this business, so this is our 83rd Valentines Day,” she said.

Chickowski said it’s been very busy at the store due the cold weather delaying delivery.

Stacy Coburn said the temperatures have made for unique challenges with Valentines Day preparation coinciding with some of the coldest days of the year.

“These -40 temperatures were not helping with the flower deliver process,” Coburn said.

Coburn said if the significant other in your life doesn’t like flowers, you can always grab a nice box of chocolates.
