Cold temperatures expected for foreseeable future

The cold weather is back as the new calendar month begins.

February is usually cold in the Battlefords and area but after a milder than usual January, the trend won’t continue this month.

The Battlefords received approximately 19 centimetres of snow this past weekend, which prompted Environment Canada to issue a snowfall warning for the area. This included Highway 16 from Lloydminster, all the way to Yorkton.

Terri Lang from Environment Canada said that we’re into the cold air now, but low cold cover, which will actually keep much of the cold weather subdued for the next few days. The bad news is the wind will continue to stick around, and more extreme cold warnings are forecasted.

Starting on Wednesday, a ridge of high pressure from the arctic will push down, plummeting temperatures overnight to below -30 Celsius, closer to -35, the meteorologist said.

Lang said while it’s cold, the weather is a bit warmer than the tred temperatures for this time of year which are into the negative forties.

“We’ll keep an eye on it, but people should be prepared for the really cold weather,” she said adding the cold warnings are expected by mid-week.

“It’s more the wind chill than anything else that we’re concerned about,” she said. “You can get frost bite very quickly, within a few minutes.”
