The Battlefords may be hit with up to a foot of snow

It’s time to get your shovels ready.

A winter storm will be hitting the Battlefords and area tomorrow, and Saturday, causing reduced visibility, high winds, and a lot of snow. Environment Canada is calling for 10 to 20 cm of snow, but there is the possibility for up to a foot of snow to be dumped in the area.

Terri Lang with Environment Canada says that a series of lows coming out of Alberta will track through Lloydminster, and down highway 16 all the way to the Yorkton area. In the band, it’s expected to be hit with heavy snow throughout the two days.

Lang says that North Battleford could be hit heavy in the storm.

“The Battlefords area looks like they’re in the bulls eye for some of the heavier snow,” she said. “(Be) prepared for that heavy snow.”

The system forced Environment Canada to issue a Winter storm watch early this morning, and with blowing and drifting snow, it calls for tricky driving. Following the system, it’s expected that the temperatures will dip back down into next week.

This winter, Saskatchewan has become accustomed to the warm temperatures, but this storm will hit the region and bring severe weather that will correlate to some tricky driving. Lang says that people may have forgotten how to drive in the snow, and that the winds will bring reduced visibility.

“Be prepared when you’re out on the highway, things always happen,” she said. “Be sure you have the equipment in that you need. If you don’t have to head out, you shouldn’t.”

Before you head out, check the highway hotline to ready yourself with what you’re going to drive through. The weather could also be different at the destination, so it’s best to check the forecast of where you’re going as well. In exposed areas, there’s a good chance visibility will be reduced. Lang summed it up quite simply.

“It’s winter in Saskatchewan, people should not take it lightly,” she said.
