North Stars explode for nine in win over Terriers

Feb 2, 2019 | 11:57 PM

The Battlefords North Stars completed a perfect weekend showing Saturday night, defeating the Yorkton Terriers at Farrell Agencies Arena 9-1. The win follows a 3-2 overtime victory over Melville Friday.

Dylan Esau opened the scoring with his second of the season firing a puck home far side on a three-on-one to break the scoreless tie just 2:43 into the first period.

Brett Gammer made it 2-0 Stars on his 10th of the season, firing a wrist shot home on the team’s first power play of the game, from Braydon Buziak and Cody Spagrud.

Entering the second period, the Stars picked up right where they left off prior to the intermission, with Austin Becker cashing in on his fifth of the season to make it 3-0 Stars, not-yet five minutes into the middle period.

After about 10 minutes of scoreless hockey, MacGregor Sinclair reignited the scoring parade notching his team-leading 22nd of the year, and second in two games.

Sinclair’s goal was just the first of three Stars’ tallies in the final seven minutes of the second, with goals to follow from both Gammer (his second) and Buziak, who chipped in with a shorthanded marker before the second intermission.

With just twenty minutes to go in the game, the Stars were ahead 6-0.

In the third, Yorkton scored one of their own, a Branden Klatt shot from in tight, giving the forward his 23rd on the season.

Just two minutes later, however, the Stars again answered back with Esau notching his second of the game and third of the season.

Elijah Loon-Stewardson, Friday night’s OT hero, also scored his second in back-to-back games, potting his 12th of the year to make it 8-1, before Brett Gammer’s third of the evening capped off the hattrick and threw an exclamation mark on the victory for his team.

Gammer’s performance marked the Edmonton product’s first three-goal game of the season, giving the rookie 12 goals on the campaign – good enough for fourth-best amongst freshmen players in the league.

Stars’ goaltender Joel Grzybowski stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced in the win, backstopping his team to victory.

With the victory, the North Stars move two-points up on Humboldt for second spot in the Global Ag. Risk Solutions Division, just two points back of Kindersley.

The North Stars return to action Feb. 6 against the Melfort Mustangs in Melfort. Pregame Wednesday will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
