Battlefords RCMP welcomes new patrol pooch

Oct 30, 2018 | 12:00 PM

What can outrun any criminal and has a spot-on sniffer for crime?

It’s Soap, of course — the Battlefords RCMP detachment’s new patrol pooch that recently joined the team.

With the F Division Police Dog Services (PDS), RCMP Police Dog handler Cpl. Colin Pyne said the German Shepherd started in the local detachment only a few weeks ago serving the area.

Soap covers the central-north-west quadrant of the province in his work.

The PDS can be called upon for a wide variety of tasks — including tracking, searching for missing persons, drug detection, apprehending criminals, searching property and persons for evidence, crowd control, high-risk calls and vehicle stops, as well as for police/community presentations.

While he’s new to the role, Soap was put to the test recently in a domestic violence case.

“We located a suspect who fled the police from a domestic assault,” Pyne said. He added Soap also assisted on another recent domestic assault case and located the suspect by tracking the individual.

“It led to both of the suspects’ arrests,” Pyne said.

The RCMP Police Dog Services has been with F Division since 1935.  PDS units are located strategically throughout the province, including North Battleford, Meadow Lake, Prince Albert, Swift Current, Saskatoon, Regina and Yorkton. Currently the F Division has seven police dogs.

In addition to serving the RCMP, Police Dog Services also assist municipal police-field personnel in investigations.
