Veteran linebacker Chip Cox agrees to one-year contract with Montreal Alouettes

MONTREAL — Veteran line-backer Chip Cox agreed to a one-year deal Tuesday with the Montreal Alouettes.

Cox, 34, is entering his 12th season with Montreal.

The native of Columbus, Ohio, has won two Grey Cups with Montreal (2009-10) and was named the CFL’s top defensive player in 2013. The four-time league all-star is the Alouettes’ all-time leader in defensive tackles (901).

“Chip is one of our leaders on defence,” GM Kavis Reed said in a statement. “Over the years, he’s won individual awards all while being part of championship teams.

“That experience is a great asset for our team. We know that Chip will be a true mentor for younger players.”

Cox appeared in 15 games last season, registering 67 tackles while knocking down four passes. He has played in 176 career games with Montreal, 171 as a starter.

Montreal also released receiver Alton Howard, defensive back Drico Johnson and running back Josh Robinson — all Americans — and Canadian punter Zackary Medeiros.
