North Star alumnus Magnes commits to ACAC’s MacEwan Griffins

Less than a month after the Battlefords North Stars Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League season came to an end, graduating player Garan Magnes found his home for next season.

On Friday, it was announced the 21-year-old will be playing college hockey in his hometown of Edmonton, choosing to suit up for the MacEwan Griffins, who compete in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). The Griffins have won the last two ACAC championships.

Magnes played for Griffins head coach Michael Ringrose when he was a member of the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Spruce Grove Saints last season, as Ringrose was the Saints head coach at the time. But Ringrose has known Magnes dating back to his days with Vimy Ridge Academy.

“[Magnes] was a dominant player in Junior A as a 19 and 20-year-old and is poised to be an impact player now at this level,” Ringrose said in a Grffins press release. “He can play up the middle, on the wall or on the back end and has a world-class level shot.”

Indeed, Magnes played both up front and on the blue line during his brief time with the North Stars, as he was acquired at the Jan. 10 trade deadline.

He tallied 15 points in 18 regular season games for Battlefords, mostly playing as a defenceman, and then had two goals in eight playoff games, two of which were played at forward.

“He can beat a goalie clean from the blue line and can play the top on the powerplay,” Ringrose added. “He’s big and strong and can play a heavy game if he needs to, and stand up to the rigors of a playoff series that goes three games in three days.”

Before his Junior A days, Magnes played 62 games in the Western Hockey League for the Edmonton Oil Kings from 2014-16 and another 18 contests with the Seattle Thunderbirds.
