Orcas break 10 new club records at LC Prairie Championships

Mar 30, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Six swimmers from the Battlefords Kinsmen Orcas combined to set 10 new club records at the Long Course Prairie Championships in Regina last weekend.

Madison Higgs and Taylor Parker led the way with four new Orcas records each: Higgs in the girls age 13-14 category and Parker in the boys 15 and over category. Parker also swam the 100-metre freestyle under the Western Canadian Championships (WCC) qualifying time (he has already swam under the WCC qualifying time in the 50-metre freestyle).

Higgs’ new times were set in the 50-metre breastsroke, 50-metre backstroke, 200-metre butterfly (second-place finish), and 400-metre freestyle.

Parker’s new times were set in the 100-metre, 200-metre, 400-metre, and 800-metre freestyle races (second-place finish in the 200-metre freestyle).

Brandon Nord and Slade Pruden had the other two Orcas club records, with Nord setting a new mark in the 50-metre breaststroke for boys 15 and over and Pruden breaking new ground in the 50-metre backstroke for boys 13-14. Nord already has two races under the WCC qualifying time as well, which he got at Canada Games in Winnipeg last summer.

Reece Sommerfeld also swam in Regina at the LC Prairie Championships, setting three personal best times, one in the 50-metre freestyle, one in the 400-metre freestyle, and one in the 100-metre backstroke.

The Western Canadian Championships are in Victoria April 12-15, where Higgs will compete. Nord and Parker are eligible to compete, but have chosen instead to race at the Mel Zajac invitational in Vancouver at the beginning of June, where the meet structure allows them to race more events than they would at the WCC.
