North Battleford’s Ron Delorme 1 of 8 Sask Hockey Hall of Fame inductees

There is no doubt Hayley Wickenheiser is the most recognizable name from this year’s list of eight Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame (SHHOF) inductees, but there is also one local man that will be inducted alongside her in the players’ category this summer.

North Battleford native Ron Delorme, a Cree man who grew up in Cochin, is one of three former players that will be inducted into the players category at a ceremony in Swift Current on Saturday, July 7. In addition to Delorme and Shaunavon native Wickenheiser, Regina native Bill Hicke, who passed away in 2005, will be inducted posthumously in the players’ category.

John Kelly Lovering will also be inducted posthumously in the builders category, Lyle Wilhelm will be inducted in the officials category, Larry Johnson and Dennis Loeppky (who passed away in 2017) will be inducted in the grassroots category, and the 1987-88 Notre Dame Hounds will be inducted in the teams category.

“With such a rich hockey history in Saskatchewan, we know we once again have a superb class to announce,” SHHOF Board of Director Co-Chairs Blair Davidson and Jack Brodsky said in a press release. “There are so many people from our province who have made outstanding contributions to this great game that choosing the inductee class each year is always difficult.”

Delorme played his junior hockey in Prince Albert, Swift Current, and Lethbridge before going on to play in over 500 games in the National Hockey League for the Colorado Rockies and Vancouver Canucks. The 62-year-old has spent the past 18 seasons as the chief amateur scout for the Canucks, an organization he was worked for in some sort of scouting capacity since 1986.

Delorme has been a role model for aspiring First Nations hockey players and athletes because he broke barriers. He has spent a lot of his spare time visiting reserves and attending banquets encouraging Indigenous youth to aspire to great things.

The 2018 induction dinner will be held at the Credit Union iPlex in Swift Current on July 7. Details of the event will be officially released in the near future when tickets for the event will go on sale through the Swift Current Broncos office.
