New street mural has historic ties

Oct 2, 2017 | 5:00 PM

North Battleford residents rolled up their sleeves once again in the name of community safety, Saturday, to create a vibrant street mural at the intersection of 95 Street and Abbott Avenue.

This is the city’s second road mural. The design this time reflected the Vimy Ridge Memorial Flight logo to commemorate the battle’s 100th anniversary.

Locals selected the design from two choices.

“It looks beautiful,” Mayor Ryan Bater said. “I think any project where neighbours come together, and work together for a common purpose is good for the city because that’s what creates community.”

The aim of the street mural project is to discourage drivers from speeding in the neighbourhood.

“The neighbourhood had requested the project because there are a lot of complaints on that street about traffic that goes too fast,” Bater said. “This is an attempt to see if the street mural can calm traffic, and get motorists to slow down.”

More than 50 residents volunteered to take part in the project to paint the mural.

The project came at no cost to the city. Discovery Co-op donated the paint while Piatt Training and Consulting covered the costs of a corn roast for participants.

Bater said if any other residents would like to have a street mural in the future to improve their neighbourhood they should make a request and the city will consider it.

The city’s first road mural was created by volunteers on Clements Drive in August.
