JP II’s Stynsky to play in senior bowl

May 16, 2017 | 12:00 PM

It’s a showcase of the best Grade 12 players from across the province and this year the SMP Senior Bowl will feature JP II Crusaders running back Jacob Stynsky.

The senior bowl was developed to promote players in their last year of eligibility in all three styles of football played at the high school level: six-man, 9-man, and 12-man. It is both a celebration of what players have contributed to the game during their high school careers and an opporunity for them to be scouted.

Stynsky has already committed to Presentation College for the fall but it’s still a great opportunity for him, according to his father, JP II athletic director and football assistant coach Vic Stynsky.

He will play for the nine-man squad, which is what JP II plays during the season.

“I know he was happy about it and is really looking forward to playing in the game,” Vic said. “It’s a weekend of training and different things too so he’s looking forward to working with different coaches and different players throughout the north. It’s another good experience for [him].”

The weekend will begin with practices and scrimmages and culminate in the North versus South all-star game on Monday at Saskatoon Minor Football Field in Saskatoon.

In order to make the team, Stynsky had to try out in April with two-a-day practices on April 22 and 23.

Vic wasn’t with Jacob when he first found out he had made the team on the Sunday evening of tryouts, but he was glad when he did find out because he said Jacob is very deserving of the spot.

“He’s worked hard and when you go to a tryout camp where you have different coaches and different plays and different things, you’re always wondering how you’re going to adjust and adapt to that but I know Jacob is dedicated and really committed to his football,” Vic said. “So I knew he would do whatever he could to adjust and make the team.”

There will be roughly 170 graduating players from all over the province partaking in the weekend’s events, which begin on Friday.
