Grass fire near Comp High School left to burn

May 3, 2017 | 12:12 PM

A small grass fire broke out near North Battleford Comprehensive High School yesterday afternoon, but the Fire Chief of the North Battleford Department, Albert Headrick, said the situation was kept under control.

The fire department responded to the call, but decided to be proactive and let the fire burn under controlled conditions for preventative measures.

This time of year, dry weather makes areas such as fields more prone to setting ablaze, so the fire department decided to be proactive.

“[Yesterday was] the second call that we’ve responded to a grass fire, and sometimes you get a cigarette butt out in the grass… so we decided instead of coming back we would do a pre-burn,” Headrick said. “It prevents us from having to come back here on a continuous basis because of a discarded cigarette butt.”

Fires aren’t common in the field surrounding the school, but Headrick stressed that smokers should make sure they are butting-out in a safe area during dry, windy periods.

“We just want to make sure everybody is cautious out there,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of dry grass, and when it gets windy, it’ll be very difficult to control.”

Principal Bruce Friesen of North Battleford Comprehensive High School said the pre-burn didn’t affect operations at the school aside from the smell of smoke, and was in contact with the fire department throughout the process.
