Community members hope to knit 100 blankets before Christmas

A handful of women are using their love of knitting to help a local charity.

The group, which operates under no title or leadership, has pledged to make 100 blankets for the Battleford Early Childhood Intervention Program, all in time for Christmas.

BECIP is an organization that offers support for families with children who are developmentally delayed.

Vistara Sidebottom, one of the many knitters, assured that all are welcome to the knitting circle. She said that people have joined with no knitting experience, years of experience, and even those who don’t want to knit are welcome to join to just spend time out of the house.

One women described it as the highlight of her week.

“People come and go,” Sidebottom said. “There’s no joining fee. There’s no commitment that you have to be here every week or anything like that.”

The whole group started a few years ago when Sidebottom and a friend were offered a grant to “yarn bomb” spots around the city. From there sparked a trail of knitting projects, like knitting circles in the mall, the library and Central Park.

“The whole idea was to get knitting more into the public eye,” Sidebottom said. “That it wasn’t just about knitting scarves and hats and things like that. That is was about doing something creative and unusual.”

Last year the group made 130 tuques for BECIP.

“It is a community project. It’s not just us knitting. We’re trying to do something that’s very interactive in the community,” Sidebottom said.

Members hope to get all the blankets done by mid-December so they can present them to BECIP in time for the Christmas hamper.

The group meets every Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Crandleberry’s.
