Donations from the community contributing to new CT scanner for the hospital

The Battlefords Union Hospital is getting close to purchasing a much needed new CT scanner, with help from the community.

Innovation Credit Union donated $5,000 to the BUH Foundation to go toward the new equipment on Wednesday, Aug. 24.

“Innovation Credit Union strongly believes in supporting the communities that we deal in,” Chief Retail Officer Rosalie Payne said. “It was important that we look at not only the financial wellness of the individuals that live in our communities, but the health, physical and mental wellbeing as well, so this was a very good cause for us to support.”

The current CT scanner at the hospital is more than 10 years old, which is past the regular turnover rate for technology of its kind.

BUH Director of Medical Imaging Cheryl Mitchell said the scanner has been breaking down lately, so the hospital has been without service for patients at times.

Some improvements with the new machine will include speed, which is especially necessary for trauma and pediatric patients, quality of the image, and reduced radiation dosages.

Mitchell said the foundation is close to its fundraising goal and the hospital will start looking into purchasing a new machine in the fall. She said the foundation is essential to the hospital’s operations.

“Funding from the foundation has enabled us to purchase most of the equipment in our department, so without them we would be lost,” she said. “We really appreciate it and then anyone that does donate to the foundation again helps us move forward, so it’s really wonderful.”
