Rain gives western Sask. a much needed soaking

May 24, 2016 | 12:31 PM

Farmers and firefighters will be pleased by the soggy long weekend.

The Battlefords recorded five millimetres on Saturday, four on Sunday, and 27 mm on Victoria Day for a total of 36 mm, or roughly an inch and a half. Meadow Lake was mostly missed. The town received about three mm on Sunday which was the weekend total according to Environment Canada.

The Unity/Wilkie area recorded 37 mm Monday and 11 mm Saturday, for a total of nearly two inches of rain for the weekend.

A separate pocket of rain hit the Buffalo Narrows area, with 11 mm on holiday Monday after 25 mm on Sunday.

As of Tuesday morning the Battlefords area has a low fire threat. It’s part of an area stretching from southwestern Saskatchewan to the northeast. The risk around Meadow Lake north to La Loche is moderate, and grows farther north.

To the west, the rain appears to have mostly missed Fort McMurray, and the fire risk is still extreme.
