Dekker Centre to fill with voices of the North

May 22, 2016 | 3:52 PM

The halls of the Dekker Centre are in for a treat. Three time Juno Award winner Susan Aglukark will kick off her Canadian tour in North Battleford Thursday, May 26 with a night of music, culture and storytelling.

After traveling on the road as both a musician and keynote speaker, Aglukark said she’s looking forward to just kicking back and getting in to the music. “We haven’t played full band in Saskatchewan in a long time.”

The audience can expect a wide range of material to be played at the show. Not only will they be treated to a selection of hits, but also a medley of what Aglukark called her “story songs.”

“They’re a touch of what I call ‘living stories.’ Story songs of traditional Inuit people from the traditional Inuit way of life to the current world they’re living in. And the stories they share are so real, because it happened in their life…there is going to be something for everyone.”

Aglukark has a hard time defining herself as any one kind of musician. Though her music spans a multitude of genres such as country, folk and pop, she prefers to approach her music as style with a broader scope of definition.

Putting Inuit music on the world map is just one of the many things Aglukark has a hard time believing about her career path. Not only has she received many accolades for her music but also for her humanitarian efforts.

“I love the person I’ve become because of my work. It’s like this career is a big open field. I’m still learning so much about myself through this career. Anything that will help me grow, teach me something new.”

She has performed for numerous world figures, including Queen Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela and Jean Chretien. She is also an officer of the Order of Canada –the nation’s highest order which seats Aglukark among the country’s greatest thinkers, creators and humanitarians.

For the upcoming show, Aglukark hoped the audience will find something new in the old favourites, and something to remember in the stories she tells.

“You’ll have a lot of fun, trust me.”
