Battlefords Union Hospital’s Bigger Picture radiothon hailed as big success

May 19, 2016 | 4:48 AM

The greater Battlefords community came together Wednesday for the Bigger Picture radiothon at Battlefords Union Hospital. Walk-ins, call-ins, doctors, hospital staff and business owners helped to purchase a new CT scanner for the medical imaging department.

At the end of the 12 hour radiothon, $474,647 was raised. People from all over the province phoned in and donated including contributions in the thousands.

Former mayor of Battleford, Chris Odishaw donated $10,000. He explained his daughter Macy had recently needed the care of a CT scanner and x-ray machine.

“My daughter’s a dancer,” he said.  “She wasn’t feeling good and needed physiotherapy and the healthcare is a part of it all, really.”

Dr. James Lawrence of River Valley Eye care donated $5,000. He spoke of the importance of medical imaging in his line of work.

“I can’t order CTs when I see patients in my office,” he said. “But I refer very frequently to the local opthalmologist, and he orders CT scans quite regularly here. So, I know that a lot of the patients that I see who need to be referred for medical care do end up using the technology here.”
