The Shrew

Mar 4, 2016 | 12:00 PM

Battlefords Community Players – March 16 – 19 –  Full Dinner Theatre – Call 446-3133 for tickets.

The Shrew by Charles Marowitz, freely adapted from Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, loses none of its original sparkle.  An intriguing piece of theatre that includes the use of masks and music to tell the story as the tragedy of Kate.

A constant battle of opposites Kate- Petruchio, He- She, Mother nature- Father Church, Mother Earth( Ghea) and Father Time. Who has the upperhand? Petruchio? But what is that smile on Kate’s face? She? As she applies twentyfirst century psychology but whoa… is that a fist I see?

Constantly paradoxical. At times comedic, often horrific, the struggle continues.

Petruchio shows the court that he has tamed Kate, but in his heart he fears that he has created a spiritless Kate, not what he wanted, at all. Kate has been brought to submission but she did not give up, a victory of sorts in defeat. If relationships can’t endure the pressure of time; if they must change to endure, then the changed relationship endures, but what of the original? Paradoxical!

What happens next?

The struggle continues.
