Frank honoured with induction to Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame

Jun 9, 2018 | 8:00 AM

Gary Frank will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in just a few months time.

Frank, who signed with the Blue Jays in 1978, played in the Rookie League, Florida State League and Winter Instructional League from 1978 to 1980. After his professional baseball career ended, Frank played in numerous senior leagues across the province as well as in New Brunswick. Once his playing days came to an end, it was on to building the game.

Frank became active in Regina Minor Ball and City Park Baseball, implementing a youth baseball program for the communities of Emerald Park and White City, registering six new teams in his first year, then nine in the following year, including two AAA clubs.

The Melville, Saskatchewan product said he was very honoured to learn he will be inducted into the player/builder category of the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame. Frank said many people helped him achieve his success, including numerous teammates and coaches.

“It’s flattering, first of all,” Frank said, “You don’t get there by yourself.”

Frank said he is very proud of his involvement in building the game as a coach, as well as creating the building blocks of baseball in the White City and Emerald Park area.

“I enjoyed both sides; the playing and the coaching,” Frank said. “I moved out into the Emerald Park area and there was no baseball program out there. My oldest was just getting into ball, and it’s a big community, and I saw the need to put something together. We went through a big area so it was good to do and a lot of work, but it was worth it, putting a community program together.”

Frank was inducted into the City of Regina Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, and will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in Battleford Aug. 18 along with 12 others.
