Northwest Prairie Pirates win Tier 1 provincial gold

Jul 25, 2017 | 9:36 AM

The Northwest Prairie Pirates put up a whopping 55 runs in just five games at the midget AA Tier I provincials this past weekend in Swift Current, which was enough for them to win all five games and take home the gold medal.

They allowed just 11 runs against during that span as well, picking up wins against the Regina Blue Jays, Lumsden Cubs, Moose Jaw Canucks, and Parkland Expos twice.

Their gold medal game was a tight one against Parkland that was scoreless through four innings. In the end, the Pirates got a single from Unity’s Dillion Poschenrieder and a double from Dalton Spence in the fifth inning to go up 3-0. From there, they wouldn’t look back, securing the gold medal thanks to a shutout win from Jaydon Gartner.

The Pirates play in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League AAA division and are based out of Lloydminster but they have plenty of locals on the team.

Paul Cubbon is from North Battleford, Cooper Olson is from Maidstone, Mickenzie Sondergaard is also from Maidstone, while Dylan Bosch, Tanner Huber, Damian Lantz, Skyler Mackie, Dillion Poschenrieder, and Ethan Scherr are all from Unity.

They were eligible to play in the AA provincials because their record in the SPBL wasn’t good enough to qualify for AAA provincials. They finished league play with an 8-22 record, although they win four of their final six games.

Two other AAA teams from the SPBL were in the AA tier I provincials: the Expos and the Swift Current 57’s, both of whom finished below the Pirates in the SPBL standings this season.

Because of their provincial championship, the Pirates will now get to compete in the AA 18U Western Canada Baseball Championships in Kamloops, B.C. from Aug. 18-20.
