Beavers doubleheader cut short

Jun 11, 2017 | 8:16 AM

The Midget AA Beavers fell to the Regina Pacers 8-7 in a short game Saturday afternoon.

Only six innings of the first match were played before the doubleheader was cancelled due to weather conditions.

“We were actually winning 5-3, and then they got five runs to make it 8-5,” said Beavers head coach Bert Benoit. “We came back with two runs and still had an inning to go, but [the game] got rained out.”

Despite the loss, Benoit said the Beavers are improving, especially at bat, something the team has been focusing on in practice.

“We’ve been practicing some faster pitches with the pitching machine,” he said. “We’ve also got some really small balls almost the size of a ping pong ball, and a really small bat that we’re practicing hand-eye coordination with, and it’s paying off.”

The team’s throwing and catching have also seen improvement.

Though the Beavers have seen a rocky season, Benoit said team morale is still high and the players are having fun regardless of the scoreboard.

The Beavers will be looking for a win when they head down to Regina on June 17 and 18 to conclude the season. The team will play back-to-back doubleheaders against the Regina Blue Jays, and the Regina Buffalos.
