North Stars to face Flin Flon in Canalta Cup final

The 2017 Canalta Cup Finals will feature the Battlefords North Stars hosting the Flin Flon Bombers, after Flin Flon defeated the Nipawin Hawks 3-0 in game seven on Tuesday night.

It’s the matchup many expected halfway through the season and the matchup some have also hoped for, as the North Stars will have an opportunity for revenge after getting knocked out of the playoffs by Flin Flon in the semifinals last year. That series was 4-1 and sent Flin Flon to the finals, where they lost in six games to Melfort.

Battlefords and Flin Flon haven’t faced off since a pair of home games for the North Stars on Dec. 14 and 16, which they split, falling 4-2 and then winning 3-2. The season series favours the North Stars 3-1, as they won back-to-back games in Flin Flon way back on Oct. 7 and 8 by scores of 4-3, in a shootout, and 3-0.

Exactly 14 players from each side return from last year’s playoff teams.

The two clubs have had different paths to the finals. Both got a bye in the first round, but since then the North Stars have gone 8-0, while the Bombers defeated the Notre Dame Hounds 4-1 in the quarter-finals and then overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat Nipawin 4-3 in the semifinals.
