Battlefords residents breaking balls for a cause

Dec 2, 2016 | 3:57 PM

The annual 93.3 The Rock Christmas Ball Breaker campaign is getting people to smash ornaments for a good cause.

Over the next two weeks The Rock will be on-location in various businesses around the Battlefords, asking residents to bring donations for the food bank in exchange for a chance to win a Ski-Doo.

“Every year this helps so much for the food bank and a lot of people get to enjoy what they’re doing while doing a really great thing,” The Rock announcer Ryan Rathwell said.

The campaign kicked off at Norsask Farm Equipment Friday, Dec. 2 and saw quite a few entries just in the first hour. For each case of soup or $10 donation, participants entered to win the Ski-Doo and got to smash a Christmas ornament, which could contain bonus entries.

Cash and food donations go to the Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre. The community’s need for the centre has been increasing this year, so they need even more donations to keep up. The centre has been helping an average of 2,000 people per month this year compared to 1,600 last year.

Rathwell said the campaign is always a success in terms of donations and a lot of fun.

“I think every year it gets better and better so I can’t wait to see what happens this year,” he said.

The final draw will be Dec. 16 at Sobey’s.
