PHOTOS: Blaze destroys home in Swift Current

Where four walls and a roof once stood in Swift Current, now only charred rubble remains after a fire Friday night.

The fire started before 8 p.m. in the house at 540 Russel Crescent, in the northwest part of the city.

Garnet Hanson was speaking to a couple on a nearby driveway when he saw smoke.

“I came over, and the young couple came with me, and then you could see flames coming out. So we went in and hammered on the door and nobody answered, and the young girl was going to go in and get the dog. And then when she got in there, like I bellowed when I got in there.”

Hanson said two women were inside sleeping, but they got out safe.

“I happened so fast, I didn’t have time to go get my fire extinguisher, and by the time we got over there and even got them out, it was well enough on its way that fire extinguisher of mine wouldn’t have done anything anyway.”

No one was hurt in the fire, and, as of Saturday morning, no cause had been determined.

On Saturday morning a GoFundMe page was started for the family who owned the home.

“On the evening of April 22 Lyris, her daughter Brooklyn and family dog luckily escaped their family home with only the clothes on their backs. Their family home burnt to the ground and with it all their worldly possessions. Insurance will never be able to replace the sentimental things they have lost or fully be able to cover starting from scratch. Their family has touched so many lives here in Swift Current and across the province, please join us in helping Lyris start over,” read the page.

Within two hours, the page had raised more than its $10,000 goal.
