The Fred Light Museum in Battleford was recently recognized in an awards competition from an international organization.

The museum that officially opened in 1980 was honoured with the award for the History Museum of the Year in the Corporate LiveWire Canada Prestige Awards competition, after being nominated for the title.

The Prestige Awards recognize small- and medium-sized businesses and organizations that have achieved success in their market over the past 12 months.

Museum Manager Bernadette Leslie credits the museum board, the many volunteers as well as the summer students that together help make the Fred Light Museum such a popular place to visit.

“It is a great success,” she said.

Leslie added the town has also been a strong supporter of the museum, which has helped it flourish.

When selecting winners for a prestige award, the judging panel bases its decision on several criteria, including service excellence; quality of product/service provided; innovative practices; value, ethical or sustainable methods of working, as well as consistency in performance.

The museum’s various displays reflect much of the history, from advances in technology to changes in fashion over the years. There is also a replica of an old general store, an exhibit of early farming tools, and a display of firefighting equipment among some of the highlights.

Leslie said visitors to the museum say how well the displays are set up and how organized everything is, to make it easy to navigate and appreciate all the collection has to offer.
