****UPDATE****
There will be a come and go celebration of life for Viola Waters on May 18. 2024 from 2:00 to 5:00 at the Pioneer Hall, 792 – 101 street, North Battleford.
Viola (Toots) Waters passed away peacefully at Battlefords District Care on January 30, 2024 at the age of 93.
Vi Waters was born in North Battleford on October 30, 1930 to William and Ella Dunk.
She grew up in North Battleford and graduated from NBCI on June 30, 1948. She joined Sasktel as a telephone operator July 2. She left this job in 1952 to have her family then returned after 15 years. Vi was very proud of the 25 plus years she worked for Sasktel.
Vi had four children, whom she shared with her former husband Sid Waters: Wendy, Pat, Don and Ellen. They raised their children on the farm east of Prongua. During this time she was a member of the Prongua Womens Institute, a 4-H leader, chair of the local school board, and secretary of the local telephone company.
Vi loved taking pictures whether it was of a grizzly bear or a whitetail fawn, birds and flowers of all kinds, anything else in nature, and videos of family gatherings. She was always up for a drive, long or short, to get the perfect photo.
She loved to travel especially to the Yukon. Her first few trips there she drove on her own before the Alaska highway was paved!! On one trip she went all the way to the Arctic Circle. Vi also visited the Maritime provinces; so her travels took her from sea to sea to sea in Canada.
Another love of hers was dancing. She joined singles dancing clubs in Saskatoon, serving on the executive of one. Vi met many good friends through these clubs. One very special person she met was Denis Simons, unfortunately their time together was cut short when he passed away following a stroke.
Vi was always making something: sewing clothes for her family and herself, crocheting afghans and christmas decorations, and knitting clothes for grandchildren and table cloths.
Even though she has gradually left us over the past ten years due to her demetia she will still be missed very much by her surviving family:
Pat Waters, Battleford and son Craig Chiga
Don Waters, Battleford and his children: Dustin Waters (Stephanie), their daughter Olivia, Kelowna; Marcel Waters, his children Ryley, Jenna and Drake, North Battleford; and Cerise Waters, North Battleford
Ellen (Ken) Oppold Whitehorse and their children: Jill Marie Oppold, Portage la Prairie; Jay Michael Oppold, Whitehorse; Jody Lynn Oppold, her daughters Bella Archambault-Oppold and Ilianna Reeves-Oppold, Whitehorse
She was predeceased by her twin sister at birth, her daughter Wendy Waters, sister Mina Trudeau and brother Bill Dunk.
We would like to send a special thank you to the wonderful staff on Ward 3 at Battlefords District Care Centre.
