Viola Doris Lorraine Knight
May 16, 1940-October 1, 2024
It is with sorrow in my heart that I announce the passing of my beautiful mother, Viola Knight, after a seven-year, courageous battle with breast cancer. Viola had a strong faith in Jesus Christ, her Savior, and I believe she is resting in His arms, without pain and suffering, rejoicing for eternity for a life well lived and reunited with her family and good friends.
Viola was predeceased by her parents Lars and Annie (Bird) Nelson, her husband of 52 years Cecil Knight, and her siblings Arthur, Leslie, Evelyn, Stanley, Melvin, Marlene, Darlene, Alfred, Norman, and Elroy. She is survived by her sister Shirley Wynn (Nelson), her daughter Wendelyn Atwell (Knight), her grandchildren James Atwell and Stephanie Smith (Atwell), her son-in-law Jacob Smith, her great grandsons Maverick and Kodiak Smith, as well as her many nephews and nieces throughout Canada and the United States whom hold her dear.
Viola was born and raised on a farm in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, the youngest of a large family. She remembered her home fondly and visited it when she could. She was faithful in keeping in touch with her extended family throughout her life and was loved in return by so many. Viola and Cecil also made their home in Edmonton, Chetwynd, Beryl Prairie, Hudson Hope, Horseshoe Bay, Surrey, and Nanaimo where they made many dear friends. Viola worked in banking, retail, bookkeeping, and accounting. She also ran her own income tax business for many years. She moved to be near her daughter in Castlegar in 2018.
Viola enjoyed baking, canning fruit, cooking, gardening, playing cards, keeping in touch with family, walking Casino (her beloved American Eskimo), and watching her soaps and Dr. Charles Stanley on T.V. She loved watching the birds in her yard, the cats catching the grasshoppers, and the colorful fish in her aquarium.
As per Viola’s request, she will be cremated with no service locally. There will be a memorial gathering in her home town in Saskatchewan and another in her husband’s hometown in Manitoba, where she will be interred next to Cecil. More details to follow.
I am positive that Momma would be the first to thank the medical and support staff in Castlegar and Trail Hospitals for their support and kindness. She herself supported various charities throughout her life, including breast cancer research. She believed there would be a cure for it soon. If you are so moved, consider donating to this cause.
