Sophie Ewanchuk (Nykiforuk) passed away peacefully at the River Height Lodge, North Battlefod, SK. on May 9, 2023 at the age of 95. Sophie was born January 28, 1928 in North Battleford, SK. to parents Nykola and Paraska Nykiforuk.
She is lovingly remembered and survived by her children: Bud (Eileen), Myron (Pat), Bronie (Bea), grandchildren: Lara (Mike) Morien, Robert, Braden (Angela), Bryson (Katherine), Curtis and Zachary and great-grandchild: Ava Morien
Sophie was pre-deceased by her husband: Joseph, infant son: Dennis, parents: Nykola and Paraska Nykiforuk, sisters: Betty, Anne, Nellie, Minnie Caroline, Sally and brothers: Dmytro and Steve.
Mom attended Dominion School where she played a big part in singing, acting in plays and Ukrainian dancing and was an active member of CYMK Ukrainian Youth Organization. When Mom’s father passed away in 1941, Mom remained on the farm to help her mother tend to the farm as her older brothers and sisters left the farm.
In 1941 mom met her future husband Joseph Ewanchuk, and married in October 1948. They would make their home in Whitkow, SK for the next 23 years. Mom was a full-time mother raising three sons, tending to the small farm and becoming a great cook and gardener.
In 1971 mom and dad moved to North Battleford. Dad became a School Bus driver and mom took on housekeeping at the Marlborough Hotel. She then worked at the Indigenous Hospital and when it closed in 1977, she worked in housekeeping at the Battleford Unit Hospital until she retired in 1991.
After Joseph’s passing in December 1983, mom lived alone and continued to work at the Union Hospital. Her life centered around the light of her life, her children and grandchildren.
Mom was very proud of her home and yard in North Battleford and would grow bountiful gardens which she harvested to share with her children. Every trip home resulted in a treasure box of vegetables, pickles, sauerkraut and perogies.
Mom was always a happy person and had a magical way to welcome new people that she would meet, leaving a lasting impression of a kind, gentle, loving person that she would be remembered by.
Now the final piece of her world has been put in place, for she has been freed of all her earthly burdens and she is reunited with her beloved Joe and precious son Dennis, never to be parted again.
The family greatly appreciates the loving care given to Mom over the past three years by Battlefords District Care Centre, Wards1 & 3, River Heights Lodge West Wing and her personal caregiver, Rita Meckling.
