It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our Mother, Shirley Thompson, on Tuesday September 21, 2022 at the age of 86 years. She passed peacefully with her family by her side, at River Heights Lodge in North Battleford, where she was residing. Shirley will be dearly missed by her daughters Teresa (Dave) Prosko and Brenda (Trevor) Mino; grandsons Andon and Ty Prosko; and granddaughter Cara Mino. She is also survived by her brother Murray Young. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, of 61 years, Walter Thompson; her mother Violet Peterson; stepfather Otto Peterson; father Harold Young; sister Clara Horne and brother Raymond Young.
Shirley was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, the second of four children. In her childhood years she lived in North Battleford, Saskatoon and Kelfield. After graduation, Shirley completed a business course which led to her job at City Hall in the Public Works Department and Payroll. On May 16, 1959, she married Walter Thompson. They were blessed with their first daughter Teresa in 1969. It was then that Shirley embraced her proudest and most important job as a fulltime wife, mother and homemaker. In 1971 they completed their family with the arrival of their second daughter, Brenda. Together, Shirley and Walter enjoyed bowling, dancing, curling, camping with the girls, day trips to the farm at Richard and family trips to B.C. to visit her Mom and siblings.
She took pride in everything she did for her family, including sewing, knitting, baking, canning, care packages, babysitting her granddaughter and the list goes on. She loved her flower & vegetable gardens, her rhubarb and raspberry patch and had quite the green thumb. She was known for her delicious rhubarb cake, peanut butter cookies and homemade bread.
Shirley and her husband Walter, also enjoyed many years working at Kramer Auctions. She took pride in her responsibilities and enjoyed the interactions and connections she made with people at the auction sales. When her legs started to fail, she spent her time with word search books, playing scrabble and jigsaw puzzles. She would often comment that she loved that the staff at the Lodge would come to her room to help with her puzzles.
Shirley was always there to lend a hand to anyone that needed it. She loved her husband, children and grandchildren beyond measure. She was a hardworking mother and devoted wife, who cared for her husband until the end.
A heartfelt thank you to the staff at River Heights Lodge for all the love, care and support given to Shirley and her family.
As per Shirley’s wishes, she has been cremated. Family memorial to follow at a later date. Donations in Shirley’s name can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
