On February 27, 2023 Philip Richard Horse passed away suddenly at the age of 64. He was born on December 1, 1958 in Thunderchild to the Horse family but made his home with his Duquette family in Mistawasis. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Emily Roberts, their son Adam Lawrence Roberts, his daughter Shelly Chief, one grandson. His sister Violet (John); brothers Clifford, Peter & Eugene. His aunties Christina Pahtaykan and Julia Crookedneck. His nieces and nephews in Mistawasis and his osima who called him capan Jim, we all had a special place in his heart. Numerous cousins and relatives in Thunderchild and Onion Lake. Philip was predeceased by his parents, Josephine (nee Pahtaykan) & Isadore Horse; his sisters Clara (Norbert), Gladys, Lila, Shirley (Walter), Sharon and an infant sister. His brothers Lawrence and John Paddy. Numerous grandparents, uncles, aunties, and cousins who have gone on ahead. In his late teens, he came to stay with omsimaw Clara in Mistawasis and eventually made his home there and in Prince Albert with Emily. There are many memories of him sharing his snaring and skinning skills and how he used to set up a camp in the bush to hunt, trap and fish. He was always willing to share his traditional knowledge and cultural teachings and most importantly his strong belief in our nehiyaw ways. Philip was a quiet and humble man, but he also liked to laugh and joke around. Heaven is now spic and span, the butler has arrived, our family butler is no more. We will remember him for his commitment to his wife Emily and how they took care of each other, they were together for 28 years. They proudly shared that “we never fought, we were always laughing and teasing each other”. May we learn from this commitment and how taking care of each other is important.
It’s so different nowadays, no
one cares for each other like long ago.
A traditional celebration of his life will take place in Thunderchild, at his request a one night wake will be
held on Friday March 3, 2023 and funeral Saturday March 4, 2023 Local elders will officiate.
