It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Peter Prebushewski. He passed away at the Hafford Special Care Centre on April 29, 2023.
Peter was born in Prud’homme, Saskatchewan, in 1936 into a large homestead farm family. Peter was a kind, intelligent man who worked hard on the farm in his youth and then throughout his life to provide for his family with his lifelong partner and wife Marie.
Peter and his wife Marie met in the Prud’homme area and were married in 1961. They shared a love of friends, music and fun. Dancing began their romance and stayed with them throughout their lives together. They had five boys over the years and early on lived in Prud’homme and worked the farm south of town. Peter worked for a time at the Colonsay potash mine like many farmers with another job to help support a growing family. The family moved to Cudworth in the early 1970s. Peter continued to farm with the boys by Prud’homme while Marie began her teaching career. During that time Peter took additional training as a water treatment technician to work at the Dana radar base, furthering the work he began while living in Prud’homme. In 1979 Peter and Marie sold the Prud’homme farm and purchased another farm by Hafford, SK. Over the years Peter’s desire for progress and improvement led the family to explore and adopt emerging practices including direct seeding and expanded specialty crops. The family even built their own direct seeder when few existed.
Peter was a strong supporter of Marie’s career. After Marie retired from teaching Peter joined Marie in her work in adult education and establishing learning centres in small rural communities and First Nations across the province. Their commitment to support community development also took them to Ukraine, where during several trips they worked with small communities in aiding the transformation of collective farms to co-ops. Peter and Marie shared a seemingly limitless desire to help others.
Peter was predeceased by his wife Marie. They shared a wonderful 60 years of love and mutual respect. His parents were Tillie and Alex Prebushewski. Peter was a wonderful father and gentleman, with a mischievous sense of humour. He will be fondly remembered by his five sons along with his loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many other family and friends including his remaining sibling Francis.
A funeral service will be held at Ste. Solange Church in Hafford, SK on Thursday May 11, 2023, at 11:00am with interment to follow at Ste. Solange Cemetery. Services will be followed by a time for family and friends to celebrate Peter’s life at the Hafford Communiplex. This opportunity together will also celebrate the life of Marie who passed away in 2020 when gatherings were not possible.
Memorial donations can be made to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, 620 Spadina Ave., Suite 200, Toronto, Ontario M5S 2H4; website – https://www.cufoundation.ca
