It is with great sadness that the family of Nick D. Boklaschuk announces his passing on March 2, 2016, at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Nick was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Jean Boklaschuk, as well as his parents, his sister Nettie Harbus, his brother George Boklaschuk, and his step-brother Pete Boklaschuk. Nick is survived by his three children, Bernadine Fiske (Al), Brian Boklaschuk, and Wayne Boklaschuk (Sheila); his nine grandchildren, Todd Fiske, Corey Fiske (Michele), Kelley Fiske-Nielsen (Eric Nielsen), Cody Fiske, Dean Boklaschuk (Tracy), Mandy Hall (Jon), Shannon Boklaschuk (Jayce Ollenberger), Carrie Boklaschuk (Bryce Bahrey), and Jade Boklaschuk (Jennifer Christal); his 16 great-grandchildren, Sydney, Taylor, Pyper, Frederic, Conall, Brooklyn, Taylor, Jacob, Toni, Logan, Ed, Ruby, Weston, Gavin, Jack, and Samuel; and his sister, Mary Rothenburger.
Nick was born on December 27, 1922, in the Hafford, Sask., district. On February 4, 1942, he married the love of his life, Jean. In 1944, Nick and Jean moved to a farm in the Hafford area, where they raised their three children and where Nick lived until his death. Nick often told his grandchildren that their grandma was the most beautiful woman in the world, and he took good care of her until her death in 2011 in Hafford.
Nick never desired to go on lavish vacations or travel far from the farm; home was always where his heart was. He found a piece of heaven on Earth on his land and he remained committed to farming it with his son, Wayne, until his death. Nick was very proud of the fact that he was able to continue living on his own on the farm and that he was able to keep his house tidy and cook his own meals. Those who knew him knew that Nick had particular tastes in food and drink; the more garlic, bacon, potatoes, KFC, and Golden Wedding and orange pop, the better!
In addition to farming, Nick’s passion was gardening. He was so excited to plant his huge vegetable garden that sometimes it seemed there was still frost on the ground when he sowed the seeds. His potatoes and cucumbers thrived, and he was happy to pass on some of his veggies to his family members. Nick was full of personality and was always a hit at family gatherings, where he made people laugh and smile with his stories, questions, and songs. He will be remembered as a tough, strong, hardworking, and unique grandfather who definitely marched to the beat of his own drum. Above all, Nick loved his family, and he never forgot to tell his grandchildren that he loved them after each visit.
A funeral service to celebrate Nick’s life was held on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 from the Chapel of Sallows and McDonald – Wilson and Zehner Funeral Home. Nick was laid to rest forever beside his beloved wife Jean at the City of North Battleford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
