Viola passed away at her residence on December 13, 2023. She was 81.
She was the loving mother and very best friend of Sandra Michelle Anne Garrington (Cardinal) of Centralia, WA
She was the adoring grandmother of Seth Garrington of Seattle, WA and Sunny Olivia Garrington of University Place, WA.
Viola is survived by her sister, Katherine “Kathy” Weiers.
She was predeceased by her: Father, Norbert Weiers, Mother, Frances Weiers, Brothers Albert and Herman Weiers, and her ex-husband John Cardinal.
Viola was born and raised in Saskatchewan. She moved to Edmonton to attend the Edmonton General Hospital School of Nursing, started by the “Sisters of Charity of Montreal”, also known as the Grey Nuns. The Grey Nuns were the first nurses of Canada, providing care to all, specifically the immigrant and indigenous populations. EGH Nursing School operated from 1895 to 1970 and graduated almost 2000 nurses. Only 8% of the students were from Saskatchewan, which demonstrates Vi’s incredible dedication, resilience, and intelligence. Vi had many accomplishments in her almost 4-decade career with the Grey Nuns, including organizing the medical personnel for the visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II during his 1984 visit to Edmonton, and organizing the equipment requests for all the proposed units for the new Grey Nuns Community Hospital, which opened in 1988. Vi embraced the Grey Nuns spirit in every avenue of her life. Her faith in the Catholic Church was unwavering. She was an amazing nurse, leaving a lasting impression of love with all her patients. Vi was able to retire early, and she moved back to her beloved Saskatchewan to start her best life on Jackfish Lake. She took in her Mother, providing loving care, and many pieces of chicken, until Frances passed. She also took in her ex-husband, caring for him as long as she was able. Vi was an amazing mother, grandmother, friend, wife and sister. She was smart, compassionate and loving. She could make any costume for Halloween, she was an amazing quilter, baker, painter, knitter, there was not a craft she didn’t perfect. If she wasn’t making quilts for loved ones, she was making Nanaimo bars, baking butter tarts, muffins and crème pies for her friends. Vi was always sharing her talents and gifts with those she cherished. Her loving spirit touched everyone, including her daughter, grandchildren and close friends, to her acquaintances and people she came into contact with in her daily life. She has left a huge hole in the world and she will be greatly missed.
