Martha Bradley
December 14, 1921 to March 22, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of Martha Bradley announces her passing on March 22, 2020 at Villa Pascal at the age of 98 years

Martha was predeceased by her husband Walter; brothers: George and Skip; sisters: Eileen, Bernice, Joyce; and granddaughter Kim. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Arlene (John) Whitacre, Lyle, Jim (Ione), Terry (Lois), Darl (Shelley), and Lois; brother, Ken (Norma) Harris; sister, Edith (Fred) Fry; 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

On a very cold day in a small hospital in Lashburn Saskatchewan, mom began her life‘s journey. She spent her first four years in Waseca Saskatchewan. The remainder of her childhood years were spent in Alberta mainly around Manville and Vermillion. She was the oldest of eight and very much a second mother figure to them.

During her teen years she worked out to help support the family as many teens did during those years. She got up early and milked cows on a nearby farm and continued to work on another farm for a couple of years.

At the age of 17 to 18 she was housekeeping for a family in Manville. She went out back to a water pump and to her surprise a turn in her journey was about to happen. When she got to the pump a young Walter Bradley was getting water for a blacksmith shop. Her employer said “They met at my pump.” They courted for around a year then married on December 9, 1940.

A day after their marriage they moved to BC along with one of dad‘s brother. They heard work was plentiful in BC. Unfortunately, permanent work was hard to find. Mom on the other hand found a job being a live-in servant for a wealthy family. She was able to make enough money so they could make their way back home the following March.

In the 40s dad was accepted to the Air Force but after dad‘s mom passed away, they moved to the farm south of Blackfoot, Alberta.
They farmed there until 1947. Mom had told me she loved farm life for many reasons:
• spaciousness of the prairies
• love the animals: sheep chickens,turkeys and horses
• loved the simplicity of life style
• hospitality of friends and neighbours
• knowing there was always a helping hand.

In 1947 they moved to North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Dad became a resident blacksmith and Mom continue to be the jack of all trades being a homemaker. Other jobs she encountered were child care, working at Kresges lunch counter, River Heights lodge cleaning staff, McGavin‘s bread basket, and old-fashioned foods.

Mom was a woman of strong faith so when a neighbour asked them to come to a home Bible study she and dad joined. They became charter members of the Alliance Church that was founded in 1949. This was a pivotal part of our life that instilled Godly faith in each of us. We are so grateful.

Mom was such a beautiful spirit and those who were lucky to experience it, treasured that gift. I know our mother was very thankful for the relationship she had. If she could she would thank each of you for the gift you gave her as well. Each different but no greater than the next. She just loved us. She loved life and continues to do so with her heavenly reward.

There will be no service at this time due to the world’s concerns. Therefore, a memorial service will be held at a later time.

Memorials in Martha’s honour can be made to a charity of your choice.
