Marlene Carol Sitter (Pickett) was born May 10, 1947 to William (Bill) and Nellie Pickett in Meadow Lake, Sk. 4 years later her brother Rick arrived. They spent their early years on a farm near St. Cyr, Sk. Those years were spent tagging after her dad with farm work and picking berries with Grandma Benn.
Mom went to school in Green Lake, SK. until Grade 6. Grandpa was working away form home so the family spent winters in Green Lake or Meadow Lake. In 1961 they bought a house in Meadow Lake and permanently moved to town. Grade 8 she attended Westview; Grade 9 and 10 in Carpenter High. Once she completed Grade 10 mom moved to Saskatoon to work as a nurse’s aid.
Dad started dating mom when she was 15 years old. They were married July 10, 1965 in North Battleford, Sk. when mom was 18 years old. Their first child, Tammy, arrived in 1968. Soon after they moved to the Sitter homestead near Blue Bell, or Meadow Lake area. Tim came along in 1970 and Aaron in 1971. Mom and dad managed first a pig operation and then a cattle farm. Of course, there were always the chickens, cats and dogs.
In 1973 the family joined the Worldwide Church of God. The church became a focal point of faith, church family, many memories and lifetime friendships.
In 1976 the family moved to Marshall. Mom insisted that dad stay home and help raise us kids rather than go long-haul trucking. He spent 13 years working in the oilfields before he was able to go back on the road again. Mom often traveled with dad seeing beautiful country all over the US and Canada.
Tammy married Eugene Hampel in 1993. In 1995 the first of the grandchildren, Laine, arrived. Within 5 months, Tim and Deb welcomed Jordan and Aaron and Rose brought Kalin into the family fold. The next faze of life was beginning. For mom, the more the merrier – she loved watching her children and grandchildren grow. We caused her heartache and concern. We brought her joy and happiness. She was always curious and kept track of what every child was up to. Her memory was amazing.
Her church family was also important to her. The conflict when ‘the church’ shattered was very difficult for her because she just wanted everyone to get along. To love and respect one another was more important than the details of doctrine, although she studied diligently to try to understand for herself. She made an effort to stay connected despite differences of opinion.
Mom’s gift to the world was her ability to listen, to connect and to sincerely care about others. She was compassionate. The last few years of mom’s life slowed her down considerably. However, she was always available by phone and spent hours listening and talking with friends and family. She shared what she knew, with discretion, so that we could also support one another. She genuinely loved her people.
