In Loving Memory of Kathleen Bertha Mackie
July 29, 1956 ~ December 29, 2023
Kathy was born in North Battleford, SK to her parents: Joseph and Aldina Gelinas. She spent the first years of her life growing up in Maidstone, SK. In 1968 her parents bought the Vawn Hotel. She went to school in Vawn and graduated from grade 12 in 1973.
In her teenage years, Kathy enjoyed hanging out with the Vawn girls, sewing, playing softball in the summer, broomball and skating in the winter and going to dances. It was at a dance in Edam, SK when Kathy was 16 years old that she met her future husband, Wally Mackie. They started dating and upon Kathy graduating she moved to Glaslyn, SK into the basement of her future father and mother-in-law’s house. She was immediately employed at the Coop store where she became the assistant manager and was employed there for 33 years.
Kathy and Wally wed on July 10, 1976 in Glaslyn, SK followed by a dance at the Vawn Hall. The next day there was a gift opening and lunch at the Vawn Hall that many family and friends attended. Kathy and Wally’s first home purchase after their marriage was a mobile home in the mobile home park in Glaslyn, SK. In 1981 Kathy and Wally bought their first house. At that time housing was cheap, but inflation was through the roof. Interest rates soared to 21%. They had a huge house warming party and many friends and family attended. That same house where Wally remains today was the home of many get togethers. Everyone in the area always knew the door was open to stop by for a visit and to have a drink. There door will remain open as Wally will continue to live there. Please feel free to stop by to visit Wally. On September 13, 1988 their son, Mitchell Mackie was born. A new generation of families and friends always knew the “Mackie house” was the place to be.
All throughout Kathy and Wally’s marriage and raising of Mitchell it was in the small town of Glaslyn where there was community togetherness, softball tournaments, hockey tournaments, snow mobile rallies and much more. They spent lots of time ice fishing in the winter, boating, summer fishing and hanging out at Little Loon, Helena and Turtle Lake in the summers.
Kathy will be greatly missed by many. She was predeceased by her parents: Joseph and Aldina Gelinas and her father and mother-in-law: Jock and Vi Mackie.
