Robert grew up on the farm at Speers, Battleford, and Mayfair Saskatchewan. He attended elementary school in Speers and Battleford Central School. Then in grades 10-12 attended Mayfair Central School, graduating in 1975. After graduating he worked local construction jobs as a Cat operator, plowing, breaking land, and building roads. Also worked for a time on the oil rigs . He even tried his hand at hard rock Mining at Leaf Rapids, Manitoba. All this before he decided to get a trade as a Heavy Duty Mechanic at Kelsey institute in Saskatoon, where he graduated among the top of his class.” Mechanicing” was his calling as he was very much interested in anything that had a motor. His first mechanic job was at Spence Construction in North Battleford (mechanics, painting equipment, and welding). He then later moved to several different places in Alberta to work as a Heavy-Duty Mechanic such as Edson (Johnson/Herbert Construction), Rainbow Lake and High Level (Dechant Construction). He then worked for different pipeline companies and eventually settled around Lloydminster area for work at Precision and then Beretta. He really enjoyed working in the construction industry and the people he worked with.
In between working when he was younger, he traveled to England, Europe, Asia and across Canada. He always came back to the prairies. His hobbies were downhill skiing, hunting, boating, his pets, and fixing cars/trucks. From early on he loved fast cars as he fixed up his own Super Bee/Monster Truck/Harley Davidson bike/ Supra. He loved making trips on his Harley into the States and in Canada. Family was important to him- making trips back to the farm for family get togethers. Robert was a very generous, humble man, whatever the circumstance, had a great sense of humour and appreciated a good joke.
Robert will be greatly missed by all that knew him and will hold a special place in our hearts.
A Celebration of life will be held at the Mayfair Community Hall 2:00p.m. on Saturday, January 6, 2024.
