Sgt. Richard Vernon Commer (retired) February 10, 1946 to November 25, 2023

Richard passed away following a short battle with cancer. He was born in Brandon, Manitoba, the oldest of 5 children. He attended school in Brandon, graduating from Vincent Massey High School in 1965. Following graduation, Richard went to work for CP rail, before joining the RCMP. Richard spent his career in Saskatchewan, posted to several communities. His last detachment was North Battleford before his retirement after 35 years in the force. He also spent several months taking part in a peacekeeping mission in Haiti where he was working with other peacekeepers to train the Haitian police force. After he retired, he and Maggie spent time taking their motorhome to chuckwagon races in the summer. He enjoyed fishing with his friend Don in summer and winter. Rick loved his grandkids and was especially excited about the recent birth of his great-grandson Abel in August of this year.

Richard is survived by his wife of 56 years Margaret. His daughters Stacey (Tyler) and her step-children Rhiannon and Kalli, and Michelle (Jason) and their children Mckenna (Josh) and their son Abel, and Jacy (Jordan) as well as three sisters, Carol (Larry), Mary-Ann (Doug) and Sandy (Bert) as well as sister-in-law Eileen (Ray) and brother-in-law (Allan) and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as his favourite Auntie, Jean Mazier from Manitoba. 

He was pre-deceased by his parents Felix and Julie and brother Tommy, as well his in-laws, Peter and Hilda and sister-in-law Patricia.

At Richard’s request, there will be no funeral. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Anyone wishing to make a donation in his memory can donate to the Battlefords Humane Society or the Canadian Cancer Society. 

The family would like to thank the staff at Battlefords Union Hospital for their excellent care and compassion.
