Westby- Randy Mark – October 15, 1961- October 27, 2022. Randy is survived by his wife, Margaret, three children, Maureen (Cameron Burant), Tabitha and Mahlon (Ally McCleary), and by his grandchildren Zachary (15), Cameron (11), and Braxtyn (2 ½), one sister, Cindy van Seters (Henry) and his Mother-in-Law, Menetta Charabin . He was predeceased by his parents, Mahlon and Pauline Westby, one brother, Eldon, and by his father-in-Law, Walter Charabin.
Randy was born in Saskatoon, SK and adopted at two months of age by his parents. The first 15 years of his life were spent in Rosetown, Sk and then the family moved to Regina for their Dad’s work where he graduated from high school at Campbell Collegiate. After graduation, he took the EMT course at The Wascana Institute of Applied Arts & Sciences, and graduated in 1984. He spent 14 years working as an EMT in LaRonge, Saskatoon and North Battleford – the latter is where he met Margaret and married her on August 24, 1991. In 1990, Randy injured his back and could no longer be an EMT, but remained involved in the safety of others throughout his career. He taught safety courses, particularly to companies involved in the oil and gas industry, First Aid, and was Deputy Fire Chief of the Delisle Volunteer Fire Department while the family lived there. In 2005, Randy and his family moved to Red Deer where they continue to reside. In March 2019, he started work at Precision Prosthetics where he was able to help others who also experienced amputations.
Randy enjoyed life to the fullest. His hobbies and interests were many. He was fascinated by the wild west – he and Margaret took part in “train robberies” as part of the Guns of the Golden West at Aspen Crossing. He had a lifelong love for photography, enjoyed riding bicycles (motorized and pedaled), and anything associated with the wild west, including horses and firearms. In 2017, he bravely made the decision to have his left leg amputated below the knee but he never let that stop him from enjoying his hobbies. The fall after losing his leg, he took up league bowling. Shelby from Heritage Lanes showed him how to bowl with only one good leg and their team name became “Stumpys” and will forever stay so named. Later, he had triple bypass heart surgery and recovered very quickly. During Covid, Randy decided to learn how to play the flute and took lessons from Thomas Bauer. He said he sounded like a cat whose tail was stepped on but he improved very quickly!
Randy was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was beloved by them in return. He had a gift of making friends and everyone enjoyed his story telling and his sense of humour. His absence will be felt by many. In lieu of flowers, please donate to charities closest to Randy’s heart in his memory: Diabetes Canada or Heart & Stroke Canada.
