Leslie Jacob Dyck was born on a snowy night in the sled on the way to the Rosthern hospital marking the beginning of a life defined by quiet strength and determination. Les now joins his parents Peter and Helen, his sister Elsie, his brother Lorne and brother in law Robert. He is survived by siblings Eileen Laurence and Janet (Cliff) Ironstand; children Michele, Cameron, and Collin; grandchildren Samantha (Dan), Jasmine, Kelsey (Sheldon), Danelle (Dillan), Hannah (Adnan), Spencer, Ryan, Alex, and Cameron; great-grandchildren Everlee and Drew; and nieces and nephews Valerie, Kelly, Teri, and Curtis, and their families, plus his many cousins.
He was the firstborn son of Peter and Helen Dyck and grew up in Rosthern surrounded by family. Les began his career with SaskPower, working throughout Northern Saskatchewan. In 1975, he purchased his first dairy farm in Asquith, which became his lifelong pride and joy. Known for his hard work and ingenuity, he modernized operations with a barn pipeline and later expanded by purchasing his uncle George’s parlour-style dairy farm in 1984.
Les was known as The Silent Giant, a name given by his nephew Kelly that fit him perfectly. Les was a quiet man with a gentle smile, a love of crosswords, hockey, and classic country music.
Les spent his final years at Prairie Meadows in Rosthern, where he deeply appreciated the kindness and care of Ralph Epp and his staff. He was grateful for the good years, good meals, and good company he enjoyed there. The family would like to thank and acknowledge the Rosthern hospital and St. Paul’s nurses and the CCA’s staff for their hard work, dedication and compassionate care.
Les will be remembered for his dry sense of humour, calm presence, and the steady kindness that touched all who knew him. True to his humble nature, Les wished for no formal service. His life will be celebrated with a hearty “fastba” at the Hamm family reunion next summer. In remembrance, those wishing to do so may make a donation to the Prairie Meadow Place Po Box 790 Rosthern, SK S0K 3R0 or to the Rosthern Hospital Po Box 309 Rosthern, SK S0K 3R0.
