Mr. Herb Cox

It is with deep heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Herb Cox on Sunday, November 16, 2025. He passed away peacefully with family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Herb faced his illness with positivity and determination as he did with every aspect of his life.
Herb was born to parents Laval and Dorothy Cox (nee Frost) August 21, 1950, in Brandon, Manitoba and grew up in the nearby rural village of Justice. He attended Elton High School and obtained a degree in Economics from Brandon University. After graduation, his employment with a finance company brought him to North Battleford, Saskatchewan. Later, Herb took an opportunity to start a real estate business in Battleford and that was the start of his 38-year career in real estate.
Herb played hockey with the East End Eagles and his teammate and friend introduced him to his future wife, Linda. They dated long distance while she completed university in Saskatoon before moving back to her hometown in the Battlefords. Herb and Linda were married August 6, 1977 and began their family. In 1984, they found their dream acreage and built the home where they raised their three children Dallin, Carla, and Calvin. When the kids were young, Herb taught them to play ball, coached their hockey teams, built outdoor rinks in the yard, became a 4H leader, and gave them GT rides behind the horse in the winter. He was very proud of his children, who all found careers and started families in Saskatchewan. His 7 grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Herb’s passion was horses. He loved riding and training horses, was an avid team penner, organized and participated in the Terry Fox trail rides, and even exported quarter horses to Germany to promote the breed.
At the age when most are thinking about retirement, Herb began a new career in politics. In November 2011, he was elected as the MLA for the Battlefords. During his 9 years as MLA, he also served as the Minister of Environment, Minister of Advanced Education, and the Government Whip.
Herb was diagnosed with bone cancer the same week that he was elected in 2011. He received and recovered from two stem cell transplants, allowing him to live the last 14 years of his life to the fullest.
Herb was a man of integrity with a strong work ethic and a quick wit. He was a family man, an excellent leader, believed in community, and strived to create opportunities in Saskatchewan to keep our next generation close to home. In each of his endeavours, it was the people he met and the friendships he formed that held the greatest significance.
He will be forever remembered by his loving wife of 48 years, Linda; son, Dallin (Janelle) Cox and grandkids: Kaylee and Macie; daughter, Carla (Broc) Brooks and grandkids: Quinn and Ashton; son, Calvin (Jessica) Cox and grandkids: Deklan, Carter and Callie; brother, Larry (Linda) Cox; sister, Rosalie (Wally) Bieganski; sister, Heather (Brad) Burtnick as well as many other family members.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, November 28, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. held at Territorial Drive Alliance Church 2302 Sadlowski Drive North Battleford, SK with Pastor Keith Klippenstein officiating.
