It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward George Loewen, 81, of North Battleford, Saskatchewan on May 6, 2023 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Ed is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eleanor; his three children: Darcy, Shelly (Ward) and Daniel (Lavaunne) and seven grandchildren: Jackson, Cleve, Kally, Tai Amy, Dawson, Dallyn and Ryder; two sisters: Anna and Mary; six brothers: Isaac, Henry, Jake (Tilly), Arnold (Helmay), Frank and Abe (Marie), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ed is predeceased by his parents: Isaak and Anna; his grandson, Zachary Edward; a sister, Helen Findlay; two brothers: John and Ben; brothers-in-law: William Findlay, Joe Reinbolt; three sisters-in-law: Beatrice, Louise and May; mother-in-law, Edith Morgan and father-in-law, Cecil Morgan.
Ed was born to Isaak and Anna Loewen in Rabbit Lake, Saskatchewan on July 31, 1941, the eleventh of twelve siblings. He went to school at Park Bluff School until he finished grade 8 after which he was needed on the farm.
In 1967 Ed married Eleanor Morgan. They had 3 children – Darcy, Shelly and Dan.
Ed loved life. His kindness, generosity and contagious smile were well known to many. His first love was his family, followed by his love of animals, especially horses. His brothers bought him his first horse, Spider, when he was a teenager and there was no looking back. His passion for driving horses continued throughout the years and he participated in many parades and wagon treks as well as driving rallies and gave wagon rides to innumerable people. He was also a long-standing volunteer at the Western Development Museum.
Ed worked with his hands all his life, he could fix almost anything. He worked at the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant for 22 years after which he was employed with Battlefords Housing Authority until his retirement in 2006. If he wasn’t at work, he was with his family, horses or working in the garden.
Poppa Ed was the best grandfather that any child could have. He always had time for his grandchildren and would take them biking, camping and wagon trekking during the summer. Holidays at Nana and Poppa’s were always full of laughter and joy.
Edward will be interred at the Battleford Cemetery on the morning of May 27, 2023, in a private ceremony.
A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor at 1:00 PM on May 27, 2023, in the Summer Hall at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford. There will be a short service followed by a luncheon.
