Charles Gilbert (Gib) Volk passed away on Monday, March 10th. He was predeceased by his father, Charles Englebert Volk, and mother, Rheta Avis (nee McFarlane), and his wife Gwendoline (Gwen) Volk (nee Brook). He is survived by son Lorne and Brad and grandchildren: Michel (Crystal), Sam, Kayla, Charlie, Ron, and great-grandson Felix.
Gib was born on July 31st, 1938, in Saskatoon and lived in Allen, Saskatchewan. After eight years, the family moved to Dauphin, Manitoba, where his father managed Monarch Lumber. Gib went to school in Dauphin from Grade 3 until matriculation in 1955.
Gib then began a long career in the lumber yard industry in The Pas, Canora, Rosetown, Winnipeg, Grandview, and Hanley, Saskatchewan. The family then moved to Saskatoon and Gib was a travelling salesman for Beatty Barn Equipment. In 1972, the family settled in North Battleford, so that Gib could work at Beaver Lumber. He worked there until 1975 when he took over the management of North American Lumber until 1983. Gib also served on the Board for the Battlefords Barons as well as the City Kinsmen Band. He was then the Emergency Measures Coordinator for Battlefords and Area for 18 years.
A big part of Gib and Gwen’s lives was Lions International. Gib joined in 1974 and Gwen in 1976. Gib was on the District Council for 20 years, President of the Club four times, Zone Chairman for several years, and secretary for many years. The club raised 50,000 dollars for the Mammography unit, as well as a lot of support for the Hospital Foundation and the Guide Dogs of Canada. Gib was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award and was recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation by International President.
Another important part of the family’s life was the cottage at Horseshoe Bay on Turtle Lake. He built the original cottage and then later expanded it to double its original size. Gib and Gwen became part of the vibrant cottage community. The original cottage was destroyed by fire when the Hamlet of Horseshoe Bay burned in June of 2002.
Gib enjoyed hunting upland birds and fishing. Gib was very busy in his woodworking shop building furniture, turning wood, and making toys for his grandchildren.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Dog Guides of Canada c/o Lions Foundation of Canada, Oakville, Ontario, (152 Wilson Street, L6K 0G6).
A memorial event for both Gwen and Gib will be held at a later date.
