Mary Kahmahkotayo (December 12, 1942-May 8, 2022)

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our dearly beloved mother, Mary Kahmahkotayo.

Mary was a mother to ten children, a kôkom, an aunty and a friend to many. She was born and raised in Poundmaker reserve and went to school there too.

Mary was strong-willed but was also a kind, loving and caring mother, sometimes overly-protective of those she loved. Her relationships with her children were overbearing at times but she meant well. She was a hardworking woman and set high standards. She made sure her kids were all fed, she washed clothes by hand growing up and were hung on the clothesline, even in the winter!  I guess that’s why she loved the song, “Suds in the bucket”.

Mary taught her children strong morals and values. For her age, she always displayed her youthful and playful nature, beauty and took pride in her dress everywhere she went. She loved singing and enjoyed country music. Mary even won a few titles in karaoke at various events. She was a great cook, especially her homemade lemon and apple pudding cakes and pies. Christmas is going to be different for all of us this year! She loved her grandchildren and wanted them to be cared for, like she cared for her own children. She loved having gatherings; unfortunately this is our last one that we will be sharing with her. She loved listening to her favorite song by Trooper, “We’re here for a good time.”

Leaving to mourn Mary, is her sister, Katie Poundmaker, her dear children, Wanda Okeynan(Harry), Brenda Kahmahkotayo (Willie Harper), Debra Kahmahkotayo, Donna Kahmahkotayo-Wohlberg (Faron), Bealiqué Kahmahkotayo, Melanie Kahmahkotayo and Neil Kahmahkotayo(Rachel Roy), adopted son, Thomas Bull; numerous grandchildren and chapans, nieces, nephews.

Mary is now greeted by her loved one that passed before her. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward Kiskotagan and Cecilia Konchinew; sisters, Margaret Thunderchild, Half-sisters, Neva Mirasty, Connie Morin, Amelia, half-brothers Tommy, Joe Kiskotagan, Henry Beaudry,  husband, Horace Kahmahkotayo; sons, Merlin Kahmahkotayo Sr., Paul Kam, John Wayne Perry, grandchildren: Tristen Wolfe,  Honey Davies, Brendan Kahmahkotayo, Brooklyn-Raine Kahmahkotayo. Blake Kahmahkotayo, twins, Ayden & Jayden Kahmahkotayo, Michael and Henry from Onion Lake.

A wake will be held at the Little Pine Band Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 10 & 11, 2022.

Funeral service will be on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at 11 am.

Interment to follow at the Little Pine cemetery.
